PFP 8/29: Two Key Stocks for This Week
The Economics Glossary defines arbitrage opportunity as "the opportunity to buy an asset at a low price then immediately selling it on a different market for a higher price." If a person can buy an asset for $5, turn around and sell it for $20 and make $15 for his or her trouble, that is called arbitrage, and the $15 gained represents an arbitrage profit.
A call option is the right (but not obligation) to buy a stock at a price given in the option, wherein an arbitrageur could buy and sell in a process commonly known as "relative value arbitrage." If someone were to buy a stock option for Company X, then turn around and sell it at a higher value because of that option, this would be considered arbitrage.
The possibilities for arbitrage are everywhere, from financial wizards selling complicated stock derivatives to video game collectors selling cartridges on eBay they found at yard sales.
For arbitrage in the stock market itself, there is a class of assets known as Index Funds which are basically stocks which are designed to emulate the performance of a stock market index. An example of such an index is a Diamond (AMEX: DIA) which mimics the performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Occasionally the price of the diamond will not be the same as the 30 stocks which make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average. If this is the case, then an arbitrageur can make a profit by buying those 30 stocks in the right ratio and selling the diamonds (or vice-versa). This kind of arbitrage is quite complex, as it requires you to buy a lot of different assets. This type of opportunity generally does not last very long as there are millions of investors who are looking to beat the market any way they can.
The result of this type of exchange is a detriment to the local economy where the exchange is taking place because that teller is giving back a disproportionate amount of dinars to the number of levas exchanged in the system.
This kind of arbitrage is actually quite common on eBay as many sellers will go to flea markets and yard sales looking for collectibles that the seller does not know the true value of and has priced much too low; however, there are several opportunity costs associated with this including the time spent sourcing lower-priced goods, the research of competing market prices, and the risk of a good losing its value after initial purchase.
None of this has seemed to deter the thousands upon thousands of people who look for arbitrage opportunities every day, but resisting the urge to turn a quick dime at the expense of a good's or even country's expense should be avoided at all cost — it could destabilize the market itself!
The "Beginner's Guide to Exchange Rates" illustrates the point of arbitrage by assuming instead that the rate is .6, wherein "an investor could take five Algerian dinars and exchange them for 10 Bulgarian leva. She could then take her 10 Bulgarian leva and exchange them back for Algerian dinars. At the Bulgarian-to-Algerian exchange rate, she'd give up 10 leva and get back 6 dinars. Now she has one more Algerian dinar than she did before."

Is my understanding correct? I tried to create a sample file about your issue as shown in the following figure.
The result is that I get a pivot table that displays the scores for each person on a quarter to quarter basis.
What I'd like to do is insert a column that calculates the difference in quarters for each person. But, I cannot seem to make a calculated cell that subtracts one quarter from the other (because, technically, it's the same field). Does anyone know how to achieve this?

Carpenter began the franchise with his classic, Jamie Lee Curtis-starring 1978 slasher film Halloween, about a masked killer named Michael Myers. Miramax and Blumhouse Productions are co-financing development and production of the project. Longtime series producer Malek Akkad — whose father Moustapha produced the original film — will oversee the project under his Trancas International Films banner. The new movie will be the first Halloween film since 2009’s Halloween II, director Rob Zombie’s sequel to his 2007 remake.
“Halloween is one of those milestone films that inspired everyone at our company to get into the world of scary movies,” said Blumhouse chief Jason Blum. “The great Malek Akkad and John Carpenter have a special place in the hearts of all genre fans and we are so excited that Miramax brought us together. We cannot wait to find and collaborate with the right filmmaker to give Halloween fans the movie they deserve.”
Legendary Master of Horror John Carpenter will executive produce a new movie in the Halloween series.

In addition to directing and cowriting the original film, Carpenter also cowrote 1981’s Halloween II. His other directing credits include The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China.
Carpenter’s last film as a director was 2010’s psychological thriller The Ward, and in recent times he has concentrated on his burgeoning music career. In 2015, he released his debut solo album, Lost Themes, and in April put out a second collection, Lost Themes II. Just last weekend, Carpenter played a small, sold out show in Los Angeles and will officially begin a world tour in Greece on May 27. Carpenter, of course, has composed much of the music which features in his films, including Halloween, and, according to a post on Blumhouse.com, he may work on the soundtrack to the new film. The article also quoted Carpenter as saying that “Halloween needs to return to its traditions. I feel like the movies have gotten away from that… Michael is not just a human being; he’s a force of nature, like the wind. That’s what makes him so scary.”
The first Halloween cost a mere $325,000 to make but grossed $47 million, making it one of the most profitable independent movies of all-time. Although not the first slasher film, Carpenter’s movie effectively defined the unstoppable-killer genre, which would subsequently spawn both Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street, as well as many less notable imitators. Other entries in the Halloween series include 1982’s Michael Myers-less Halloween III: The Season of the Witch, 1998’s Halloween H20 — which found Curtis reprising her “final girl” role of Laurie Strode — and 2002’s Busta Rhymes-starring Halloween: Resurrection.

To be able to trade in any financial market, there is a need to open a trading account with an online brokerage firm. This is because individuals cannot get access to the floors of the various trading exchanges. Imagine a scenario where traders from all over the world have to congregate at the NYMEX exchange to trade crude oil, or have to go to Saudi Arabia to trade on the Tadawul Stock Exchange. There would be utter chaos.

Islamic State," or "IS" as it is also known, operates in parts of Syria and Iraq in its mission to establish a caliphate, but has recently orchestrated more attacks abroad, the latest being last month's attack on bars, restaurants and a concert hall venue in Paris.
Known as "hacktivists," Anonymous is a collective of unknown hackers who have carried out various cyberattacks on governments and corporations. Following the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris in which 130 people died, the group declared "war" on ISIS and announced it would conduct "massive" cyberattacks on the group.
In an online message, Anonymous asked people to mock ISIS, or "Daesh" as it is also known in the West (a derogatory term for the group) online as part of its "Operation ISIS" campaign.
The hacker group rose to prominence after a series of cyberattacks against individuals, governments and organizations that it does not approve of, including PayPal, Mastercard and the Church of Scientology, among numerous others.
Activist hacking group Anonymous have declared this Friday, December 11, a "trolling day" against the so-called terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS) as part of its cyber campaign against the militant Islamist group.
Anonymous asked them to use the Twitter hashtags #Daesh and #Daeshbags and post "mocking photos" of the group – such as posting picture of goats to ISIS members with captions talking about their wives, amongst other trolling tactics.

With this information in mind, scientists ran computer simulations to see how star systems formed. An estimated 60 percent of binary systems broke up to form single-star systems, and astronomers are thinking that likely happened to our sun.
A new study found that young stars — like our sun — are forming at least 500 astronomical units apart from their companion. That's about 47 billion miles.
In the "Star Wars" universe, Luke Skywalker's home planet, Tatooine, exists in the binary "Tatoo system." Its two suns, Tatoo I and Tatoo II, famously formed a duel sunset at the beginning of the film.

A modern-day "digital" computer, as opposed to an older "analog" computer, operates on the principle of two possible states of something – "on" and "off". This directly corresponds to there either being an electrical current present, or said electrical current being absent. The "on" state is assigned the value "1", while the "off" state is assigned the value "0".
On first glance, it seems like the binary representation of a number 10010110 uses up more space than its decimal (base 10) representation 150. After all, the first is 8 digits long and the second is 3 digits long. However, this is an invalid argument in the context of displaying numbers on screen, since they're all stored in binary regardless! The only reason that 150 is "smaller" than 10010110 is because of the way we write it on the screen (or on paper).
Full answer: We only use binary because we currently do not have the technology to create "switches" that can reliably hold more than two possible states. (Quantum computers aren't exactly on sale at the moment.) The binary system was chosen only because it is quite easy to distinguish the presence of an electric current from an absense of electric current, especially when working with trillions of such connections. And using any other number base in this system ridiculous, because the system would need to constantly convert between them. That's all there is to it.
